About Our Comprehensive Program
Beyond the Confines of Traditional 28 Day Recovery
Based in Mill Valley, California, Recovery Without Walls is a confidential medical practice which provides treatment of chronic pain, chemical dependency, dual diagnoses, mental health and prescription medication issues, and problems with alcohol. The Recovery Without Walls approach integrates leading-edge pharmacology (such as Suboxone – buprenorphine), exceptional psychotherapy and nutritional support, and the best of the alternative healing modalities to promote comprehensive health and continuing recovery.
“This scenic locale combined with the best conventional and alternative healing, can produce an ideal environment to promote a deep and lasting recovery.”
Unlike many 28-day or residential treatment programs, the Recovery Without Walls outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program is patient responsive, which means it is guided by the needs of the patient rather than a schedule or protocol. Under the guidance of founder and director Howard Kornfeld, M.D., patients are encouraged to discover their own internal healing pathways aided by a skilled recovery team focused on the most advanced treatment options available.
Recovery Without Walls is an outpatient clinic; however, when intensive 24-hour treatment is advisable, patients are lodged in a comfortable private setting, a boutique hotel, or a local residential rehabilitation center. In the case of intensive treatment at a hotel or inpatient rehab, we ensure 24-hour care for each individual patient in order to provide compassionate, nurturing attention and encouragement.
Patients of Recovery Without Walls will find a wide selection of resources for good health, both conventional and alternative, through our network of specialists. We are blessed to have strong working relationships with a variety of massage therapists, practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, physical therapists, registered dietitians, personal trainers, and yoga teachers.
Ten miles from San Francisco, Mill Valley has a diversity of attractions — sidewalk cafés, theaters, intimate live music venues, and natural beauty. The town is nestled among the redwoods at the base of Mount Tamalpais and is close to hiking trails, waterfalls, and horseback riding, as well as Muir Woods, Stinson Beach, and Point Reyes National Seashore. This scenic locale combined with the best conventional and alternative healing can produce an ideal environment to promote a deep and lasting recovery.
About Our Treatment Philosophy
Expert, Team-Based, Compassionate Care
Recovery Without Walls provides caring, individualized treatment that enables our patients to find relief from chronic pain, medication management issues, and problems with alcohol. We are an evidence-informed medical practice, meaning that we use the most current medical research and advanced pharmacology to address each patient’s needs. Nationally recognized for our innovative work utilizing buprenorphine for pain management, we have published papers in The American Journal of Therapeutics and the Annals of Internal Medicine, among others.
We work primarily on an outpatient basis so that our patients can experience minimal disruption to their personal and professional lives while they heal. When necessary for inpatient intervention, patients are housed in local boutique hotels. However, if our practitioners determine that a higher level of care is necessary, we also work with local inpatient rehabilitation centers. We have exceptional psychological services to complement our medical approach. When appropriate, we also recommend nutritional support, exercise, and integrative healing methods including acupuncture, meditation and massage therapy from our trusted network of professionals.
